Blog Phase I: Lesson Plan Template


I. RATIONALE

This Geography  lesson is meant to help students gain an understanding of North, South, East, and West and help students become confident in navigating Google Earth. This lesson allows students to become comfortable with identifying physical features on maps as well as how to search for landmarks using online resources like Google Earth.

II. OVERVIEW

Grade Level: sixth grade

Subject(s): Social Studies

Topic of Study: Geography

Time Allotment: 30 min

Standards:

▪ Key concepts include major landforms and water bodies, countries, cities, ecosystems, climate, languages, religion, economic systems, governmental systems, population patterns, disease, trade routes, and settlement patterns

1c: Students use technology to seek feedback that informs and improves their practice and to demonstrate their learning in a variety of ways.

2b: Students engage in positive, safe, legal and ethical behavior when using technology, including social interactions online or when using networked devices.

Objectives: Students will be able to use technology to learn geography,  will be able to read a map and will be able to identify physical features of a country with a 85% accuracy (6/7 correct on the worksheet).

Students will be able to use technology in a safe and ethical way by not veering off the assigned website.

III. IMPLEMENTATION

The teacher would give a mini lesson on the difference between physical and human features.

Teacher will pull up Google Earth onto the projector screen for the whole class. Students will watch the teacher’s example. “Has anyone ever been to New York City? Does anyone know any landmarks that are in New York City?

 Let’s have a look at New York City by looking at it on a map. Today we will be using Google Earth to look up landmarks. Has anyone ever used Google Earth before?

 I’m going to look up the Empire State Building. Teacher points to college and explains the college is to the West. The college is to the West of the Empire State Building.

Let’s Look up one more landmark. The teacher will walk through students on how to search landmarks and cities using Google Maps. 

After the teacher models using Google Earth, students will use the attached worksheet to go on their own scavenger hunt. Students will be assessed on their ability to complete the worksheet.


IV. ASSESSMENT

Students will be assessed on their ability to complete the worksheet with an 85% accuracy (6/7 correct on the worksheet).

Google Earth Scavenger Hunt

 

 

Go to https://earth.google.com/web/ and press the magnifying glass to search. Next, write your responses on the worksheet and add what kind of feature it is. After searching the location on Google Maps, be sure to press the “X” on the window on the right-hand side of the screen.

 

 

1.     Look up “Italy” on Google Earth. Pick one of the surrounding countries and states if it is North, East, West, or South of Italy.

 

 

 Feature:

2.     Look at Italy on Google Earth. What is the capital? Write the name of a location in the capital city. How were you able to tell that it was the capital?

3.     Look up the Colosseum on Google Earth. Name one location to the West and one location to the South of the Colosseum. What are those locations? (restaurant, church, school & etc.)

4.     What is the sea between Italy and Croatia called? Is this sea on the West or East side of Italy?

5.     What is the name of one of the islands on the West side of Italy called? Name one town on the island.

6.     Search the Leaning Tower of Pisa on Google Earth. Look to the North of the Leaning Tower of Pisa and write the name of one location you see. What is the location? (restaurant, church, school & etc.)

7.     Search for the “Trevi Fountain” on Google Earth and write the name

of two locations to the South of the fountain. What are those locations? (restaurant, church, school & etc.) What city is the Trevi Fountain located in?
