- Instructional Input
· Once the students have looked at the picture, the teacher will tell the students that this is a painting of slaves who are escaping to freedom.
· Teacher will ask questions like “what are some things you know about the Underground Railroad so far?” “What are some things you want to know about the Underground Railroad?”
· Today, we are going to learn about the Underground Railroad and how heroes like Harriet Tubman helped the enslaved people escape to freedom.
· Teacher will share the KWL chart with the class on Google Docs and allow students time to fill it out.
· Students will only fill out “what I know” and “what I want to know” at this time.

- What do the students need to know prior to the lesson? How to open a Google Document, who slaves were, how to access Kahoot, what a KWL chart is
- How will prior knowledge and experience be assessed?Prior knowledge will be discussed in the beginning of the lesson when the teacher asks the class if they know what the UR was. At the end of the lesson, students are assessed when taking a Kahoot.
- How will you use this information in the planning process?I will review with the students what a KWL chart is prior to assigning it to them.
- Why should the content of this lesson be taught at this grade level? In 5th grade, students learn about enslavement and individuals who have shaped history. I think this lesson aligns well with the 5th grade standards and is engaging for this age group.
- How do the objectives that you have for the lesson align with the standards? The objectives are to fill out a KWL chart online as well as answer the questions on the assessment correctly. Students will be using technology to fulfill the objectives.
- When will the lesson be taught in the course of the school year? Why?I would teach history in chronological order because I think it makes the most sense. I would place this lesson after the students learn about colonial times, so whenever that falls throughout the school year is when I would teach it.https://docs.google.com/forms/d/e/1FAIpQLSeTHistoAwvvhd0I8SwlCwIRy6my7R_oXdBLr9HHZwpPr7znw/viewform?usp=sf_link
Hi Ellie,
ReplyDeleteI think your lesson plan is so good! It flows very well. I love the fact you used Kahoot to asses your students knowledge. I really like Kahoot too to measure the learning objective, kids love it too.
Thank you
Blanca
Hi Ellie,
ReplyDeleteLove that this is a 5th grade lesson. I really appreciate seeing older grade LPs! I think this lesson is well developed and is appropriate for your students grade and ages. I think a lot of times students can be easily bored with these topics, but I feel as though you made it more engaging so they will be able to remember and retain information well! Good job girl.
Hey Ellie. I love how you are teaching a history lesson! I feel like we haven't seen much of those in our cohort actually taught in person. I am excited to see it. I also love how you are doing a KWL chart! I think those are beneficial for students.
ReplyDeleteHey Ellie, I think is is a really good lesson you can also use for your WTL plan. It is very well written and will work great with 5th graders. History was always one of my favorite topics to learn about. So I am excited to see you teach your lesson.
ReplyDeleteHi Ellie
ReplyDeleteI really like your lesson idea. I like seeing others teach higher level grades! A WTL plan is well thought-out in your lesson. Adding a KWL chart to your lesson is essential for student success! Cant wait to see you in action delivering this lesson.
Ellie! I love the depth of this lesson plan. I think this will be the first lesson we see teaching history in upper elementary! Kuddos to you sister! Kahoot is my jam, so im super excited for that! Great job on your lesson, very well written!
ReplyDeleteThis sounds so epic! History is one of my favorite topics and I feel that we don't really get a chance to teach it as much as we would like. Great job choosing this to teach!
ReplyDeleteHi Ellie,
ReplyDeleteThis lesson plan covers so much important content, I love that you were able to integrate so many standards into the single lesson- that is awesome! I also think introducing the students to the painting at the beginning of the lesson is a great way to get them thinking, and following that initial engagement with a KWL chart is perfect for keeping the students accountable for their own learning. I love to see upper- elementary lesson plans as I usually focus on lower-elementary, so this was super insightful! Thank you for sharing!
I love how you're focusing on the history of the underground railroad, that always fascinated me as a student in elementary school. Kahoot is always so fun too!
ReplyDeleteHi Ellie,
ReplyDeleteI love how you used a KWL chart in your lesson, it’s one of my favorite activity to open up with. I also like how put together the lesson is. I can’t wait to see your lesson! Great job, I love the way your lesson is set up!
